No One Should Go Hungry

Targeting Global Goal #2: Zero Hunger

UN SDG Goal #2: Zero Hunger

Ending hunger, achieving food security and improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Goal #2: Zero Hunger is aiming to eliminate hunger in anyone & ensuring everyone has a meal to eat when hungry. Not only is the goal aiming to eliminate hunger, but it’s also working towards ensuring there is sustainable agriculture & nutritious food available.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to achieving this objective. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and disruptions in the global food supply chains have resulted in a decline in agricultural productivity, increased food prices, and limited access to nutritious meals for vulnerable communities. The pandemic has highlighted the need for urgent action to address the underlying inequalities in our food systems and ensure that the most vulnerable populations are not left without access to food amidst these extraordinary circumstances.

So what did we do?

At the beginning of 2020, all the changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic allowed us to look beyond ourselves. That's when it came to our attention the local food banks needed more donations. The local food banks struggled with food shortages since people stayed home, which increased the demand for food and reduced the supply as retail locations saw a significant decline in foot traffic.

Our solution was to enable people to donate from their homes by blanketing different neighborhoods with flyers, collecting donations, sorting them, then driving them to the Hawaii Foodbank. Over the last two years, our team has run several successful food drives and donated over three thousand pounds of food to the Hawaii Foodbank.

After each food drive, we brainstormed ways to improve the next one, from changing the walking routes to ensure the process's smoothness to gathering more volunteers to expand our reach. At the beginning of the process, it would take us several hours to complete the walking route when passing out flyers and picking up the donations. However, after adapting our procedure, it takes us, at most, an hour to complete the route.
